Additions, Kitchens, Baths, Finished Basements

Finished basements have been and still are a very popular way to increase living space at a great cost. Generally speaking, you are looking at $100 and up per square foot for additions. To finish your basement, though, you are looking at $40-$50 per square foot and up. Of course it all depends on the individual project but, WOW!, $50/sf to finish my basement? That's a complete job. Walls, ceilings, floors, electrical, egress window, etc. Talk about value! You won't find a better system at a better price--we guarantee it. Our warranties are also industry leading which translates to piece of mind. Call us today at 517-545-8651 and let us show you what we can do for you. Visit us on the web at www.paulsonsconstruction.com or www.basementfinishingmichigan.com. You can also see what your basement would like like in person at our showroom in Howell at 115 University Dr.

Windows. Are you getting the whole package?

There are a lot of companies offering windows installed at amazingly low prices. How do they do it? We regularly hear about installers who claim to be certified, but are they really? Paul & Mark are Certified Installation Masters Installers. We have proof to back it up. They even carry identification badges on them & you can easily look them up at www.installationmastersusa.com . Our competition may claim to have a “green product”, but if it is not installed properly it could leak air & water, and may not insulate properly. That will not help with your heating bills and could cause damage to the structure. If it's not installed right, is the warranty valid? Also non-certified installers may disappear from the area after the installation is complete. Our customers can locate us on Installation Masters website, along with several other qualified sites even if we do move our location. Paulson’s believes in doing a job right the first time for lasting results. Call us today for great window and door packages. 517-545-8651

Kitchen & Bath Design

Back in July were we featured in Remodeling Magazine. It was part of an article about unique ideas for the kitchen and bathroom. This sort of ties in with yesterday's blog about being able to do anything in the kitchen. The featured kitchen was, indeed, a unique one and can be viewed in more detail on our website at www.paulsonsconstruction.com under the kitchen tab. We use state of the art computer design and can produce something truly unique for you too. Call Paul today or stop by the showroom.

The Kitchen

As we get near the holiday season, we will all be visiting or hosting family, friends, and others at their homes. Most of these events end up in the kitchen. Odd, but true. Well, when that happens, remember that we, at Paulson, can improve or modify everything in that kitchen. All or part, big or small. Cabinets, countertops flooring, etc. Give Paul a call or stop by the showroom.

The 5K runs

Paul & Chris ran in the Turkey Trot (the 5K) in Detroit, MI on Thanksgiving Day. Paul's brother Tom, who is in the Army, is home from S. Korea and ran also. There were over 14,000 people in the running events and over 12,000 of them were in the 5K. It was pretty crazy but also very cool to see all of the people and the pageantry that went along with it. It was quite an event. Chris came in 26th overall---AWESOME! Paul was in the top 400--Not Bad but a new PR for Paul. And Tom, well, we're not sure. His time didn't get recorded but he was between Chris & Paul.

Last night, Paul, Chris & Peter ran in the Fantasy of Lights 5K Run in Howell, MI. Chris was 66th, Peter was 150th and Paul was 340th overall. Great job guys. A new PR for Paul again. It was a little chilly but a great night to run in Downtown Howell. The parade after the run was great as well. What a cool event.

We hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving from all of us at Paulson's Construction.

Cross Country

Paul & Alison's sons, Chris & Peter, were recognized at the Byron High School Cross Country banquet last night.
As a Freshman, Peter was awarded his Varsity letter. He ran over 300 miles during the season and worked really hard to get his times down. He did a great job.
As a junior, Chris, and the rest of the top runners, went to the State meet at MIS. They did great. It was the first time in school history that the team made it. Chris was also awarded Academic All-State. Way to go, Chris.
They worked very hard and accomplished their goals. We are very proud of them. Look for them on some jobs over the holiday season and during the summer.

Changing colors, Change the batteries

It's that time of year again. The time has changed, the colors have changed, have you changed the batteries in your smoke detectors?
It's no joke. Paul spent almost 6 years on the Howell Area Fire Department and it's for real. CHANGE YOUR BATTERIES. Non-working smoke detectors and dryer fires seemed to be the most of what we saw when we had a "structure fire". Please be safe. It only costs a few bucks for new batteries and it matters SO much.
Just like the smoke detectors save lives, our line of helpful accessible products help avoid falls, broken hips, and trips to the hospital. (We don't make this up. Our clients completely agree). You decide...which is cheaper?
Let us show you what we can do to help you or those around you.

Finished Basements

Interested in finishing your basement? Give us a call. We have years of experience and very talented people on staff who will advise you on what's best for your situation.
Below ground finishing is really not as straight forward as everyone thinks. The standard products and applications that are commonly used above ground are usually not the right things to be doing/using downstairs. We have the knowledge, experience and products to make your project come out right and work well for years to come. Being full-service remodelers, we are always ready to add a bath, a bar, or any unique element to help make your finished basement extra special.
We are your dealer for Total Basement Finishing in Michigan and we'd love to showcase our unique and innovative products for you in your home or in our showroom. From walls to ceilings to floors, we've got you covered.
We are licensed and insured and we obtain building permits for all of our basement finishing projects. With that in mind, an egress window may be required. If you would rather not have permits or an egress window or even a professional contractor do the job for you, please call someone else. We take what we do seriously and we strive to get it done the right way. Our license is very important to us and compromising it is not an option.

Commercial Work

Yes, we also do some commercial work. While it is a small percentage of the business that we do it has led to some very interesting projects.
The fundamentals of remodeling, restoration, and renovation still apply in commercial projects it's just a matter of how they are applied. When businesses move out or move in to new spaces is a perfect time to have us get involved. When it's time to update the offices or add new ones, it's a great time to contact us.
We have done many projects for tenants and owners alike who have been very pleased with our approach and end results. Remember, our core is residential and we carry those values into the commercial arena which results in a much better experience for our clients.
Not too long ago we were asked to get involved with a renovation at St. Joseph Church in Howell, MI. Whether the project is small or large, we are here to help.

Additions

This time of year many people completely disregard additions as being practical to do. On the contrary, however, it's really a great time to do it.
1. We always work year-round.
2. The snow is easier to deal with than the rain. We can work in it longer and not get wet, we can push it out of the way, and it doesn't find every little opening and flood through.
3. Pricing on materials is usually at its lowest point in the winter. Spring is when most price increases take place. Don't think for a second that prices won't go up next Spring. They always do.
4. Most additions take 3-4 months. In the winter we can still get it done and not be there in the summer when you want to enjoy your home--without contactors there too.
5. We can take your project from design through completion ANY time of year.

Accessible "Wet Rooms"

One of the things that Paul & Alison brought back from the Remodelers Show is a set of new products to allow us to do "wet rooms". What are wet rooms, you ask? Well, we've always been able to achieve a zero clearance shower (no threshold or curb) but now we have the capability of turning the whole floor into a wet floor. The products and methods have been tested and certified and it doesn't leak. How's a lifetime warranty on this system sound?
Our partners at AKW Medicare have been working on this a while and now we can bring it to you. How about a bathroom that you wouldn't have to worry about if the floor gets wet or even floods. How about a mud room with a drain in the floor that you could use to help with cleaning the pets or even the kids.
In the space of this blog we can't really do the system justice. Contact us for more information and ideas on how this would work for you.

517-545-8651 www.paulsonsconstruction.com

PS: Yeah, I know, the Stankees won again. They lead Series 3-1. Game 5 is tonight in Philly. Cliff Lee is on the mound for Philly. Should be another great game.

Certified Renovators

Paul and Andy are some of the first in the State to achieve the new Certified Renovator as it applies to working with older homes and lead-based paint issues. This is a new REQUIREMENT from the EPA. April of 2010 is the deadline for all those working with lead-based paint to be certified. Not only do those that work on the jobs HAVE to be trained but the firm they work for MUST be certified through the EPA. The new rules are very stringent and the old way of doing things in our industry is no longer allowed.
This whole program is designed for the safety of children and the other occupants of a home during a renovation project as well as the safety of those doing the work. Yes, it's new and with that goes a lot of resistance. However, this stuff is NOT optional. If you live in a home built prior to 1978, chances are you may have some lead-based paint in the home. The older the home, the more likely it will be found. We will test for it and advise the appropriate procedures for doing the renovation the RIGHT way.
Will this cost more to do the project? Unfortunately, yes it will. Please remember that this new program comes from the EPA. It is designed for the safety of all those involved in the project. And, while it didn't come from us, once you understand the ramifications of poor renovation practices, we think you'll be glad to pay a little more and really glad you found a contractor like us who knows what we're doing.
If you have an older home and want to talk to a contractor about doing your project the right way (and the legal way), get in touch with us.

2nd Annual Great Pumpkin Classic Car Show

Thank you to everyone who was involved in the second annual Great Pumpkin Classic Car Show held on October 10 at the Tanger Outlet Center in Howell. We had a great turn out with over 75 cars participating. Cars (and trucks) were judged in 19 classes, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners were awarded trophies. All entrants received goody bags and dash plaques and were also eligible for the wonderful door prizes donated by our sponsors. Many people also participated in the 50/50 raffles held throughout the day.

We had a beautiful October day, a little chilly, but nothing to deter all the classic car owners and fans from enjoying the day. As a result of the generosity of all our entrants sponsors, and in-kind donations, we were able to raise almost $6000 for the Livingston County Salvation Army. The Salvation Army provides many vital services to our community from rent and utilities assistance to disaster relief and elderly services. They also run many, many other valuable programs.

This event would not have been possible without the help of our sponsors. These fine companies have yet again proven their commitment to our community. They are Art Ventures (Brighton), Allied Building Products (Howell), Morrison Industrial Equipment (Brighton), My Crate Motor.com (Howell), Paulson’s Construction (Howell), the Tanger Outlet Center of Howell, and Wilson Tent Services, Co. (Howell).

Mark your 2010 calendars for the second Saturday in October for next year’s Great Pumpkin Car Show. We plan to make our third annual show an even bigger and better event!

All proceeds go to the Livingston County Salvation Army. Let's help them get a jump start to the Holiday season. Last year we donated over $1300. Please patronize our sponsors. Not only do they donate in the form of money, but they also give an awful lot of their time to help make this show a success. www.paulsonsconstruction.com

Pere Marquette

Our showroom, offices, and warehouse are located right next to "the tracks" in Howell. Last week, they had an event in Hamburg and the old steam engine, The Pere Marquette, came right by us on its way there or back. Alison was working last Saturday and snapped this picture while this awesome old engine was taking a break in our backyard. Not your everyday stuff. www.paulsonsconstruction.com

Zendulum

Zendulum is a brand new product that Paul has developed. It is a multi-positional foot massager. Massage therapy is really great and especially for the feet. The well-being of the feet has a lot of impact on the rest of our body and its overall well-being. Massage, however, requires you to find someone willing and able to "help you out". With the zendulum, you can do it yourself anytime and anywhere. After years in the construction business, and tons of time on his feet, Paul came up with this new invention and it really works! It currently has patent pending status and the full patent will be coming soon. You can view the website and email to purchase from there. All of this is brand new and many updates are forthcoming over the next few months. Check it out. Thanks. www.zendulum.com

Kitchens & Baths

Yes, we do all sorts of remodeling. That means different things to different people. For us, it is all encompassing. We don't build new homes, we fix, modify and improve existing ones. Especially kitchens and bathrooms. We serve the greater Livingston County area including Brighton & Howell.
The two most important rooms in any house are the kitchen and the bathroom(s). This is where every home gets the best bang. We all understand the necessity of the bathroom and the amount of time spent there. Then there is the kitchen. The most used room in every home. Everyday life, as well as entertaining always utilizes the kitchen. In the utilitarian sense and through to the more complex and inviting, kitchens set and maintain a tone for the whole home. Kitchens are critical for the occupants and how they live in the home and can even drive the purchase/sale of a home.
The same can be said for baths, especially the master bath when part of the master suite. We have done some very unique things with existing homes that no longer suit the needs of the owners.
For the investment in the project, it always comes back as improved living and/or ease of selling the home and/or higher selling price. Add it all together, and it just makes sense. Enjoy what you have. The way you want it. And reap the benefits when selling time comes.
These rooms, therefore, deserve special attention. At Paulson's, that's what we do. Let's do that bath or kitchen the way you have always wanted it. Why not? I know the "economy" isn't that great. We are paying attention. But, pricing on labor and materials is only going to go up as the "economy" improves. Act now. Come in or call us. We will take care of you. We are your source for Decora cabinets and everything custom you may need.
For all of your kitchen and bath projects contact us at 517-545-8651, stop by the showroom in Howell, or visit our website at www.paulsonsconstruction.com and for finished basements, check out www.totalbasementexperts.com. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Senior Power Day

The Livingston County Consortium on Aging presented its 22nd annual Senior Power Day. This year’s event was hosted by Brighton High School, Brighton, Michigan and was preceded the following day by a special event for care givers. Both days were sponsored by more than 60 vendors including Paulson’s Construction, Howell, MI.

The turn out was great with many people showing interest in the home modification products that Maureen, our showroom coordinator, brought to our booth. We showcased our accessible and barrier free construction products such as assist bars, zero clearance showers, wheelchair ramps and bed assist rails.

The event also included music, prizes and resources for seniors as well as information given by keynote speakers. We at Paulson’s are definitely planning to attend this very informative event next year.

Whether temporary or permanent we have the products, the knowledge and the experience to assist in any home modification projects you may have. We serve all of southeast Michigan from our base in Livingston County. Call or visit us on the web: 517-545-8651 or http://www.paulsonsconstruction.com

Truly Inspirational Speaker

The Total Basement Finishing annual convention always includes a motivation/inspirational speaker. This year it was kept a secret until the intermission of the night's events. Then it was announced that the speaker would be Nick Vujicic and we were shown his picture (a head shot) on the video screens. Everyone walked out mumbling and wondering; who in the heck is Nick Vujicic?
When we returned to our seats, a video was played. We saw a baby born with no arms or legs. We saw that same child as he grew up doing different things, normal everday household things at first. Then we saw him older and playing soccer and swimming and jumping off the high dive. We saw him surrounded by children at different events and it was truly remakable.
Then Nick was introduced and he came on stage in his wheelchair. He pulled up to a table that was set up for him and moved from his chair on to the table. He used the table as his own stage. For the next hour, we were treated to something exceptional. This man is intelligent, very funny, and truly inspirational.
What a great surprise. An experience none who were there will ever forget. A great convention.
We hope to talk with you about what we can do for your basement project. 888-4-TBF-NOW www.totalbasementexperts.com or www.paulsonsconstruction.com

Wesley Gilson.........R.I.P.

As you may be aware, there was a police situation in the news on Monday August 10th, 2009. In the end Mr. Wesley Gilson of Howell was killed by the police.
Wes and his family were Paulson's clients and Wes was a friend of Paul's. There is more to the story than what limited information has been given through the media. Please do not base your judgments of this man or the situation solely on incomplete media reports. Wes was a good man. He would never harm his family. Our thoughts and prayers are for him and his family and for the officer involved in the shooting.
Wes, God Bless.........R.I.P.

Cabinets--Kitchens & Baths & Anywhere Else

Cabinets, cabinets, cabinets. If you look around even a little bit, you'll find a wide range that you can get just about anywhere. Do you really want cabinets that you can get "anywhere"? There's more to cabinets than just "looking" good and if you have problems with the design or the order, do you know what you're going to get?
We do this every day and we see all kinds of cabinets. All kinds of good cabinets, all kinds of not so good cabinets, and wildly varying degrees of installation as well. Good cabinets cost only a little more than the not so good ones and quality installation goes right along with it. We have aligned ourselves with Decora cabinetry. Decora brings quality in everything they do. Quality woods, fabrication, assembly and finishes all in a package that is more affordable than you may think. This line of cabinets has a wide range of designs and finishes. We can even customize them to get you that unique look which is just right for your kitchen or bath. Let us help design something that will look great, function well, and meet that unique aspect you're looking for while keeping your budget in mind.
We do our own designs using the same 20/20 software that is used nationwide by designers of all kinds. We can show what you are going to get long before an order is placed. We make sure your design is complete with all accessories and all of the "little things"that are often overlooked by others.
Decora is the main brand in our showroom and we also have Aristokraft as an option. Further, we have access to about a dozen other brands through a special relationship and we offer that as well so we can be completely confident we can get what you are looking for.
Ordering cabinets from us assures you will get a complete order with a minimum of problems. If any arise, we handle it with the manufacturer and work on your behalf to make it right. And don't forget, all of our installations are covered by our three year warranty.
Kitchens, baths, offices, bars, and anywhere else you need good cabinets. In Livingston County, we want to be your cabinet supplier. For cabinets in Brighton call us at 810-229-9090. For cabinets in Howell call us 517-545-8651. www.paulsonsconstruction.com

Accessibility Products

About a year and a half ago we decided to bring accessibility products into our showroom. We have always done this type of work but the products were just "run of the mill". We have teamed up with AKW/Medicare and Health Craft to bring you some of the best accessibility products in Southeast Michigan. So, if you, or anyone you know, has a need for accessible modifications such as grab bars, no-step showers, shower seats, stability assist devices, specialty care-giver shower doors, wheelchair ramps, or anything else that will offer aid where needed, let us help.
These products are certainly a help to those with physical limitations. But our products and experience can also help with the special needs of seniors to allow them to stay in their homes. You can get an awful lot of home modifications and/or accessibility products for the cost of a nursing home or assisted living center. Also, we can help those with any temporary needs such as those who may be recovering from an injury or maybe a surgery. We even have a "buy back" program for some of our product line.
In Livingston County and throughout Southeast Michigan, we are here to help with great products and an experienced staff. We can help with all of your home modifications and accessibility products. www.paulsonsconstruction.com

Introducing................BOB!

As a way to get a little attention from those flying by us on Grand River, we have added an air dancer guy. Since we're up on the hill people miss us all the time so we thought this might be a good idea. Our daughters have named him Bob. That's because he "bobs" around all day long. It's a fun character and we have had MANY comments and lots of new interest. Enjoy!

Team Meeting

Well, I should have posted this a while ago. Our team meeting was great. We had a large turnout for beer and brats on the grill. It was good to see so many of our team all at once. Sometimes we do so much by phone that it's really good to be reacquainted on a personal level. These meetings are held every quarter. In the summer they are in the evenings so we can cook out and enjoy the Michigan weather (whatever that may be). In the winter we have them in the mornings with coffee and donuts. Great to see everyone and thanks for doing your part to make us a great team!

Homeshow wrap

Well, the whole team got involved at some point with these last two shows. Long days for most of us. It was great to meet all of the people that we did. It was also great to see existing clients at both shows. We really appreciate all of the support. The Howell show got interesting and quite fun at one point when the Jesters came by. This Barbershop Quartet was great. They serenaded Maureen with "Mr. Sandman" and then "My Wild Irish Rose". We didn't know Maureen could turn that red. Then they decided to get their picture signing in one of our accessible shower displays. It was a lot of fun and these guys are REALLY good.

We did get a chance for a Guinness, too.
Also, tomorrow is the first day of Spring. It's about time. The sun is a little warmer and it's really nice to be outside more.
May today bring the best for you and yours.

Quality

Quality matters! Even in this lackluster economy, quality is still of vital importance. At Paulson's, quality is, and always has been, our #1 objective. Buying quality is always a good feeling. When you are proud to show your family and friends what you have bought, that is a good thing. When it comes to remodeling, we know you have MANY choices. We appreciate that when a new client comes to us and we do everything we can deliver quality for that client. We have quality employees, quality contractors and suppliers, quality products, and our 3 yr warranty backs that up. Some people ask us to install certain products (sometimes they want to supply them). Many times we have to decline. There are a host of products out there that we know just won't last and we would rather install something we know will look good and function properly for many years to come. We do the research, we have the experience, we have standards that we don't compromise. Let us show you what we can do for you and your home. Call us today!

New Software

Within the next 4-6 weeks we will be up and running with our new web-based software. This new system will allow us to streamline our internal processes. Everything from initial customer contact, through estimating, production, and warranty will be handled much more efficiently. When this change over is complete we will even be able to send estimates via email. What a concept! Just another new thing to help us improve on what we do.

Updated Website

In keeping with last weeks blog about new things, our website has been updated. Over the past month or so, Paul & Maureen have been diligently working on the website. Although the overall look hasn't changed, many updates have been accomplished and much more information is there to be seen. Thanks to all of our clients who have allowed us to proudly display our work on their homes. All of the photos of individual projects are our own work and NOT stock photos from someone/somewhere else. There's a few things left to do but this round of updates should be complete by months end. The website is definitely a work in progress and we encourage all who visit to visit often to see what's new.

New year, New "stuff"

The new year brings a lot of changes at Paulson's. Some are already in motion and others will begin almost right away while still more is coming in the first quarter. Being a professional remodeler in Howell, MI means that we need to bring to our clients the best we can all of the time. Sometimes that means we need to adapt to clients needs and/or market conditions, and in general the way we do business. One way we're doing that is with our showroom.

Our new showroom is almost complete and should be by the end of January. In Livingston County there is a definite shortage of full-service home improvement showrooms (and contractors, too). We are offering a full scope of quality products, design, and of course, installation. Our new accessibility products, plumbing products featuring Kohler, and our Pella displays are in place. Tile and lighting options will be arriving soon as well as another quality cabinet line. Our goal here is offer our clients a place to go to get quality products and service for all of their needs in one place without the hassles and lack of attention that is common elsewhere. We are suited to help you with one room or the whole house. We offer products in all price ranges without sacrificing quality. Stop by or call for your appointment today! 115 University Dr. Howell, MI 48843. 517-545-8651
